Ivan Marte, 55, was born in the Dominican Republic
and moved to New York City when he was 16. He became
involved with politics, working with N.Y. Governor
George Pataki on his election campaign. He is a
professional banker, having served as director of
the Dominican equivalent of the Federal Reserve
Bank, and he is currently an assistant manager at
Domestic Bank. He is married to Rocio Marte and has
seven children, Ruth, Camila, Lucero, Gabriela,
Christopher, Gilbert and Patrick. Marte believes
that he would provide a unique perspective as an
immigrant for the community’s Hispanic population.
He also said work needs to be done to ease the
burden on senior citizens. Marte is most adamant
about addressing the issue of high health care
costs, and expressed his position to the Cranston
Herald:
“We have created this monster and no one can control
it. We must terminate this monster. We have to do
better.”
He also stresses the attention that must be paid to
education, saying children are future leaders and
their development must be a top priority. “Rhode
Island is changing. There are a lot of those who are
not aware of these changes. We must be prepared.”
AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE:
“The cost of health care has gotten way out of
control.
The government should set caps on what can
be charged
so we can bring health care into the
reach of families
and the poor”.
EDUCATION:
“Education should be the top priority of
communities, and
children should be acknowledged as the future
leaders
that they may become.”
